Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
Each investigation includes some questions that invite students to share their opinions and experiences to promote diversity, equity and inclusion in the classroom. In this investigation, the DEI question is on page 19. This may be an opportunity for a small group or class discussion, or if in an asynchronous setting, students can contribute to a discussion forum.
This investigation is an excellent cross-curricular STEAM project. Students can incorporate skills they may have gained from art, photography, or graphic design classes. The six color mixing tool offers students a great degree of creative freedom in the selection of an image, the choices and ordering of colors, and in each color’s adjustment.
The assessment task also empowers students to make choices that suit their interests and skill set. The large degree of freedom (topic, number of filters, color choices) also provides a broad range of challenges, from constructing one image that uses only 2-3 filters, to building multiple images that require the use of 5 or 6 filters.
Consider this activity to introduce students to the diversity of people and occupations involved in Observatory operations, and to imagine themselves in a STEAM career:
