Research Inclusion Working Group (RIWG)
The Research Inclusion Working Group (RIWG) actively works towards broadening participation in professional astronomy and astrophysics research with Rubin Observatory data to groups who have historically not participated or have been underserved in astronomy and astrophysics.
Identifying a cohort of researchers at small and underserved institutes.
The group reaches out individually via email to initiate contact and invite further communication with faculty at small and underserved institutes who are interested in engaging in Rubin-related research.
One-on-one support and engagement.
Virtual one-on-one meetings between Rubin staff and community members of this cohort are arranged to provide dedicated time for individual Q&A, and to identify further opportunities for custom support.
Custom virtual seminars.
A common request from the cohort is for undergraduate-level custom seminars, or tutorials that provide an accelerated learning experience with Rubin data for summer students. Find out more about requesting a custom seminar.
Financial support for travel to the Rubin Community Workshop (RCW).
Rubin Observatory has been able to provide financial support to a limited number of cohort members to enable their participation in-person at the annual RCW.
Presence at global conferences.
The group helps organize Rubin's participation at international conferences, to enable personal contact with potential new members of the Rubin community.
Collaboration with the LSST Discovery Alliance (LSST DA).
The RIWG includes at least one member from the LSST Discovery Alliance. This facilitates Rubin Observatory to collaborate with the LSST DA to define, enable, and execute programs and activities to engage with underserved scientists within the US and in the developing world.
Membership
The RIWG members are appointed by the Rubin Observatory Director. They include representatives from across the Rubin community: Rubin staff; members of the Rubin Community Science team (CST); at least one member of the LSST DA; and the chair of the LSST Science Collaborations.
To support the RIWG and its intended audience Rubin has established a specific CST role: “Community Scientist Inclusion Postdoctoral Fellow.” This postdoc will be a member of the RIWG and is charged with supporting underserved groups in the LSST community though individual and small group engagement.
The RIWG meets monthly to discuss, coordinate, and support research inclusion initiatives.
